To continue its tradition of supporting the community, Bakman Water Company and its staff puts on a Carnival at Bakman Elementary every year for the kids. In 2010, our staff even built a mobile barbeque out of an old water tank in order to grill hot dogs and tri-tip at the Carnival. Please check out our photo gallery from previous years to see pictures of our staff and the kids enjoying the event.

Community Involvement

The Bakman Family has their roots firmly planted in the Fresno community. Since branching off from their early agricultural beginnings in Fresno, the Bakman’s have been involved in various activities within the community. The Bakman’s community involvement first began in 1929 when family matriarch, Molly Bakman, made the decision to move her family from North Hollywood to Fresno, in search of a better place to raise her family. Although originally in real estate development in Los Angeles, Molly and her children transitioned into farming in accordance with the Valley’s rich agricultural heritage. They bought a 160 acre ranch bordered by Peach Avenue to the east, Willow Avenue to the west, Olive Avenue to the north and Belmont Avenue to the south.

On this land, the Bakman’s started Bakman Ranch and were so successful in their farming endeavors that they continued to purchase more land around Fresno and grew various produce such as Peaches, Apples, Almonds and Plums. Bakman Ranch handled all farming operations on various company ranches. Dick Bakman had the progressive idea to turn some of their ranch land into residential subdivisions and commercial developments. These developments fueled the growth of southeast Fresno and the area that became Sunnyside.
Bakman Water Company was formed by Mr. Bakman in 1948 to support the increasing water demands for the area that his new developments created.

While seeing the community rapidly grow, Mr. Bakman soon began to creatively market the new community in southeast Fresno. To promote the Sunnyside area, along with the help of other budding local entrepreneurs, Mr. Bakman formed a television program to support the Sunnyside area called “Storybook Village”. For more than two years, they produced this one-hour, daily, afternoon show from the KMJ-TV studios. Mr. Bakman improved the Sunnyside recreational scene as well, as he built Sunnyside Bowl in 1958, Fresno Swim and Racquet Club in 1961 and Bakman Field, a baseball field for Sunnyside Lone Star Little League, in 1962.

Throughout the years, Mr. Bakman created various businesses and developments to support the southeast Fresno area. The Bakman Family still takes great pride in the community, as Dick’s son, Tim, has continued in his father’s footsteps by creating value for the Sunnyside and southeast Fresno area through the continuing successful operation of Bakman Water Company, the creation of local businesses and the completion of beneficial real estate developments.

Tim is also active in community affairs as he was a Leadership Fresno Graduate XI; was appointed to the Fresno County Economic Opportunities Commission where he is a member of the Finance Committee, Member of the Executive Committee, and was a past President of the Board for the School of Unlimited Learning (SOUL) Charter School Advisory; is currently President and Member of the Board for the Fresno Fairgrounds; was a past member of the Board of Directors for San Joaquin Memorial High School; and was Authoring Committee Member of the Roosevelt Community Plan Update Committee.

Over the many years, Bakman Water Company has built a great rapport with their customers and has taken pride in serving them. The City of Fresno attempted to take over the Bakman Water Company in 1980, 1981, 1987 and 2004, but was unsuccessful due, in large part, to customer loyalty. Bakman Water Company can’t thank its customers enough for being such strong supporters of the business. Please click here to see a letter from the President of Bakman Water Company, Tim Bakman, thanking his customers for their loyal support and voicing their opinions in 2005.

Bakman Water Company is proud of its long-standing service to the community and frequently gives back to the community it serves through various charitable donations to such organizations as St. Helen’s Catholic Elementary School, Saint Agnes Men’s Club, the Breast Cancer Relief Foundation, the Rotary Club and the Campaign For Fresno State amongst others. Bakman Water Company also proudly supports Molly S. Bakman Elementary School and Sunnyside Lone Star Little League’s Bakman Field.
